How to Avoid Heatstroke During Hajj: Practical Tips for 2025

Each year, Hajj draws millions of Muslims to the holy city of Makkah. It is a journey of devotion and sacrifice, filled with emotion and prayer. But with this spiritual experience comes a test of physical endurance, especially in the heat.

The summer sun in Saudi Arabia is intense. Many pilgrims are not used to it. For some, it can even become dangerous. At Shifa Al Khobar, we see cases of heat exhaustion and heatstroke every Hajj season. Most of them could have been prevented with just a few simple steps.

We want to help you stay safe. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, these reminders can protect your health while you focus on your prayers.

What is heatstroke?

Heatstroke happens when your body becomes too hot and cannot cool down. It is not the same as just feeling warm or tired. This is a medical emergency.

You might notice:

  • A very high body temperature
  • Feeling dizzy or confused
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Skin that feels dry and hot
  • A fast pulse
  • Fainting

If any of these signs appear, it is important to act quickly. Move to shade or a cool place. Rest. Drink water. Let someone around you know how you feel. Do not try to continue walking or standing.

Drink water throughout the day

We cannot stress this enough. Sip water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty. Dehydration sneaks up slowly, especially in hot weather.

Carry a water bottle with you. Fill it whenever you have the chance. Avoid too much tea, coffee, or sugary drinks. They do not help in the heat.

We also suggest carrying oral rehydration salts. These replace minerals that your body loses when you sweat.

Wear light, loose clothing

Your clothes make a big difference. Choose light-colored fabric that lets air pass through. Cotton is a good choice. It helps your body release heat.

If you can, wear a wide hat or carry an umbrella. These offer shade and give your body a break from the direct sun.

Avoid the midday sun

The sun is strongest between noon and mid-afternoon. If possible, plan your most active rituals early in the morning or in the evening. Use shaded walkways. Rest when you can.

During these hours, your energy drops faster. Even a few minutes of rest in a shaded spot can help your body recover.

Keep simple cooling tools with you

A damp cloth on your neck. A small fan. A spray bottle with water. These may sound basic, but they work. When you feel warm, take a moment to cool yourself.

Some pilgrims even soak a towel in cool water and place it on their shoulders. It is simple and very effective.

Rest when your body asks you to

There is no shame in slowing down. Hajj is a journey, not a race. If your legs feel weak, or your head starts spinning, take a break. Sit in a shaded spot. Drink some water. Close your eyes for a moment.

Many pilgrims think they need to push through. But your health matters. Your safety matters. Taking care of yourself honors the gift of Hajj.

Visit your doctor before you go

Before your trip, book a check-up. At Shifa Al Khobar, we can review your health, check your vital signs, and offer practical advice based on your medical history.

We also help pilgrims with travel kits. These include hydration salts, sunscreen, pain relief, and other useful items for the journey.
